Battle of Shanghai - Fall 1937
Beginning on August 13, 1937, Japan launched an all-out assault on the Chinese metropolis and trade nexus of Shanghai. Fighting erupted in Zhabei and spread throughout the city and its environs. Bloody house-to-house fighting, accompanied by aerial and artillery bombardment, reduced much of the city to rubble. From your apartment in the International Settlement, spared from the fighting, you can hear the battle continuing a short distance away across Suzhou Creek. A charcoal fire burns in the grate, as you sip tea and tap away on your typewriter, recording your account of what would eventually be described as "Stalingrad on the Yangtze".
